Stand in a room containing the following:

Vox AC30 twin TV front amp
Meazzi Factotum Echo.
Fender Stratocaster..

And the most important ingredient:

Phil Kelly!!

Spent an evening at Phil's a couple of weeks back, interesting to stand closeup and see his technique...

Before Phil was well known i have been in his house and he did have LOUD! :D

Amanda, you are so correct. The top 3 items on that list helps, but it's having the experience and knowledge of how to hit those strings with your right hand that makes the difference. Phil's playing technique creates "That Sound".
And on that bombshell............

Here you have both, the AC30 TV Front and the Meazzi echo machine, at least almost. The amp is a DIY replica from the original AC30 TV Front amp, and the echo unit is an Etap2-HW housed in a DIY Meazzi looking box (the front panel has to be improved), both built by Jean-Paul Caro. He has also a DIY built (including the neck) Strat !
It was used at a recent meeting in the north of France, and sounded very good !
