Hank interviews

Postby George Geddes » 02 May 2017, 14:09

Both Guitar and Bass *and* Guitarist dropped through the letterbox today. ( I do wish they would stagger their publication dates...)

Both have features on Hank: G&B has an interview plus a piece on upgrading a Squier Strat to make it more 'Hankish; Guitarist gave a number of well-known names the chance to ask Hank a question, which is a wee bit different; Hank also talks his way through the tracks on the new album.

It was good to read of Hank's recognition of Jeff Beck's "violining" skills with a Strat volume control.

Just done a couple of scans of the mag that I bought yesterday...

Nice to see such greats as Brian May, Peter Frampton, Steve Howe, Steve Hackett, Phil Manzanera and Steve Lukather all asking the great man some questions. The front cover blurb says it all...

I understand (although I have not read the interview yet) that Hank states he used a Gretsch White Falcon on "Livin' Doll...!!???
Is this true?! Generally known?!

Read the interview, he didn't use a Gretsch White Falcon, it was a copy. ;)

There weren't any copies of the Gretsch White Falcon back then, so it's very likely that Hank borrowed Bruces's Grimshaw SS Deluxe, which was white with gold/brass hardware and boasted a similar style headstock.

That has always been my belief too. And of course, though Hank has stated that the guitar was a Japanese copy of a Gretsch White Falcon, the Grimshaw was made in London.

I'm fairly sure that Bruce says he himself only borrowed it!

Hank states clearly that the guitar he used on Living Doll was a White Falcon copy, borrowed from a guitarist that had arrived at the 2Is from France, having worked with Johnny Halliday. Because you don't know of any such guitar doesn't mean that it didn't exist.
