CITES difficulties

Things starting to get difficult with these new rules. I had to withdraw on a shipment two Australia. A friend of mine has a mandolin and acoustic vintage Epiphone being held by US customs. Bought through eBay. So double check when buying anything with Rosewood involved. It is down to the individual to provide evidence plus get a certificate, which can be expensive and long winded

i had a problem recently
trying to sell a yamaha TRB bass with a rosewood fretboard
i was unable to ship it using the ebay GSP (Global Shipping programme)
so only advertised for sale in the uk.

I only ever advertise guitars and basses for sale in the UK. And I won't post them either.

(If I'm prepared to get in my car and drive a few miles to collect something, I don't see why others can't do it too!)

Others will purchase from overseas and trade via the many reliable postal services. Not all have the benefit of jumping in the car and travelling hundreds of miles to pick something up

I see some companies are now taking CITES seriously and have addressed the matter

On the other hand, some companies seem to have no problems with using rosewood, not just for the fingerboard, but for back and sides as well.

CITES was on my mind when I got one of these a couple of months ago - it seemed too good to be true, but it's an excellent guitar - good tone with a nice sparkle to the sound (and with features like XLR output that are rarely found, even on more expensive electro-acoustics)

Maybe they have their relevant certification in place already, or more likely it was in stock in the UK before January....

It's a good idea to get a certificate if you buy a guitar containing rosewood so that you aren't restricted if you ever need to sell it - a friend has recently taken delivery of a 30th Anniversary Stingray 5 - these cost over £2500 - he asked for a certificate and the distributor provided a copy of the CITES certificate listing a whole group of instruments brought into the country in one consignment - including the bass with his serial number.
