At this time it's seemed that it was "Irene Bester" who were the "president" of the South Africa Cliff and the Shadows fan club.
1) I have a picture of this lady taken in 63 with Hank and Bruce...
2) I have also a picture taken (may be ?!!! = not totally sure !) but with "this" credit ... on the stage of the Colisseum in Johannesburg in 61, by Irene, ou by an other fan ?

My main problem for instance it's, for me... to know the process for posting these pictures "here" !
Didier tried (in french !!!) to explain me... but !!!

Here is the pic :

To get back to the original topic, is there any way we can view Patrice's or Didier's photos taken by the South African lady at the concert please?

Thanks!

Hello Didier. Your google links are not working. May I ask what process you are using to get to the pictures before you post them? Happy to help if I can.

Best wishes - Iain (for the mods)

Didier ;)

So !
To be continued... ;)

Best regards from France

I have followed this thread with interest.

One thing has puzzled me for years. I was aware of the South Africa recordings since 1962, curtesy of an EMI flier which included them on a list of Shadows recordings up to their (then) latest single, Dance On.

It was not until 1978 that I was able to purchase the tracks on a vinyl EP from that little shop (I have forgotten its name) in Feltham Middx. In 1980 they were included on the See For Miles CD, The EP Collection Vol 2.

I was made aware (from the Mike Read book) in 1983, of the use of Gibson amps for these recordings. My thought was

(a) but it still sounds like the classic, early Shadows sound, so:-

(b) are VOX amps essential to achieve "that sound"?

I put this point to Colin Pryce-Jones (The Rapiers) when they visited the Isle of Wight in 2006 (they were backing Jet). As the Rapiers had used Fender amps, I asked Colin about the VOX vs Fender question. My recollection is that Colin said that the Rapiers used used both Vox and Fender amps, (depending on the gig, or what was to hand) because both types could be adjusted to produce the required sound. The Rapiers tended to use Vox amps for their Cliff and The Shadows Tribute gigs because that is what the audience expect to see.

I still think that the Rapiers sound is one of the best I have ever heard.

Kindest regards
Christopher
