The arm can also be bent into any shape that suits your purposes better, Abel.
That, in effect, is what the Atkins arm is all about. It started as a fixed (non-swivelling) fitment which took a diversion round the treble end of the bridge to allow palm-damping. Later, with the swivel function added, it allowed different amounts of leverage (with the principle of moments coming into play).
Bending the arm isn't difficult, but must be done carefully, in a vice (vise) with PLENTY of padding round the arm so as to prevent pitting and other surface damage.
