Well as far as I'm concerned, the phrase 'great rock and roll band' is an oxymoron, but I take your point.

What I meant was that during the Shadows' heyday (60-68 IMO), their music was about as far from rock and roll as it's possible to gat.

The Shads were a proper Rock & Roll band in the early days when they were strictly Cliff's backing combo called The Drifters. You could argue that some of the first few Shads instrumentals were in an R & R style. When the first album was released, we began to hear a bit more 'class' coming into the tracks with tunes like Nivram & various ballad style ones. Basically they were becoming more musically knowledgeable & aware of music that was not just 3 chords & frantic playing. In a way they grew up on american R & R, & then matured as they got older. I'm sure Norrie Paramour had a big influence on them. Probably the way that George Martin gave the Beatles a big helping hand.

Tony.

I don't accept the oxymoron label but I'm not going to argue semantics. I can't be the only member here who acknowledges great rock & roll bands. I think Tony's hit the nail on the head, and it was their first album that led to a broadening of their style.

The Savage has always been my favourite, its hearing this that made me want to learn to play guitar.

You only have to look at rock and roll in general from that time, everyone evolves, Elvis for one, the Beatles. Even the music its self, rock and roll/rockabilly is different to the 70s/80s revival and even on the scene now.

Thanks chtiburnsman, great backing tracks.

This is also my favourite officially released shad tune....although I like Witch Doctor solo more, but that's never published at large, before the shads at Abbey Road CD.
Apache give me still goosebumps also...

Cheers Rob
