Paul.

Doesn't this also apply to several of the Meazzi machines too ?

Correct Paul, realised that the Penumbra site incorrectly says it is a 5 head machine , where it is in fact a 4 head machine with heads set at 75ms apart , so the Binson Echorec 2 does not meet the 6 heads at 77ms apart requirement as you established in your analysis of the original echo.

However , we did during this discussion raise the prospect of 2 echo units being potentially used to get the sound ?

Bearing in mind the echo spacing of the Binson heads , could it have been used for the first 3 or 4 echos and another echo unit for the 2nd 2 or 3 echos ? Could it be used with a LT to get the result ?

Would 2 units further explain the echo volumes ?

Fascinating to think this through and bottom it out maybe once and for all !

Incidently, the Strymon Volante with the correct echo speed and equal head spacing is capable of replicating the Echorec 2 and appears to be what Strymon modelled the disk echo type on. The tape mode appears to emulate the Roland Space echo units.

Dave, indeed it does and that is why many tape Meazzis have been modified with different head spacings and variable speed.

Roger, it could have been done with 6 Echoplexes as well! I really don't think it likely that multiple machines of any variety were used and the simplest solution remains a Long Tom. Occam's Razor applies.

Yes Paul the LT is most likely as you explained and yes it could be 6 separate echo units ! or 2 !

Clearly you have fixed your mind on the LT , fair enough mate.

Roger,

I have no particular skin in the Long Tom camp, I just think that the simplest solution, consistent with whatever other information is available, is probably the most likely.

No worries Paul I am not in disagreement with you regarding the LT being the most likely unit used.

My suggestion regarding two echo units wojld be for the Echorec 2 to provide heads 1 2 3 and 4 and the LT provide heads 5 and 6 as this gives the timings at least of what we were looking at. It is just the way the echo levels might not fit a LT should the unit be as it was designed to operate when it was made back in 1963/4 . The recordihg of Flingel does coincide it appears with the timing of the release of the LT and the Shads clearly got one about then. However you say you have encountered several LT units with some heads louder than others, but this was likely units decades after initial manufacture, which may have encountered various reasons for that to happen such as repairs . However I wonder if Vox would assemble one and not get it working to design specs before shipping out especially to the UK’S nunber one group at the time ?

I wondered whether a LT in factory form would generate the echos on Flingel. I might be wrong, but seems the heads were intended to be same volume on playback ? If that was the case and the Shads were looking for the right echo result, then it could be possible something like turning off heads on the LT and substitute another echo unit to reduce the echo level of heads 1-4 ?

Only another theory , but worth thinking about.
