Postby Thing-Me-Jig » 14 Mar 2021, 21:35

Thought you all might like to know that on the BBC Radio Sussex Saturday mid morning show just after the 11am news was an interview with Brian. No new info came out of the interview but it is now available on BBC Sounds, searching for the BBC Radio Sussex saturday mid morning show for yesterday (13thMarch21). Go an hour in to the programme and you find it

Thanks for the tip, Myles. Brian's natural charm, humour and instinctive tact always come across so well in such interviews, and the splinter in the finger story was new to me. Roll on Soho the musical, whenever that may be!

What a lovely interview - thanks Myles. Graham Dene - the presenter - used to present the Capital Radio breakfast show in London in the 1970s. In Mike Read's book (The Story of The Shadows, 1983) he mentioned that he lived next door to Brian Bennett in the Ridgeway in Mill Hill.

I already knew the splinter story, he spent the afternoon in a Paris clinic to be treated, and came back just in time for the concert at the "Grand Rex", I was there but noticed nothing, he even played a full "Little B" !

Does the 'splinter' story refer to the final tour in the Spring of 2005? I remember that Brian got a splinter from one of his drumsticks in his hand during that tour, which resulted in a bad infection for which he had to be treated in hospital. The doctor advised him to rest and quit the tour, but Brian didn't want to disappoint the fans, so he continued playing with an alternate playing style, but the drumsolo "Little 'B'" was scrapped. We went to see The Shadows in Amsterdam on Wednesday May 11th, 2005 and before the show saw Hank, Bruce, Brian, Warren, Carole and I think also Margaret and Warren's wife arriving backstage. Brian wore a bandage at that moment. Almost at the end of the show, it was time for the drumsolo. A couple of fans called out for "Little 'B'", but Hank then explained the situation and said it wasn't possible to do it that night. Hearing some of the reactions from audience members, it was obvious that not everybody already knew about Brian's injury.

Thank you for the link Iain.

I liked the interview. I hadn't heard the anecdotes about "Summer Holiday" and Brian's recording sessions with Ella Fitzgerald, nice to hear. Also, Brian's musical about Soho was new to me as well.

Sorry you missed it. BBC Sounds only holds programmes for a limited time and it seems this one has now dropped off the edge. I imagine it's a capacity issue.

Usually the BBC playback programmes are not available outside of the UK.
