How much to see the Shads in 1982?

Postby Teflon » 28 Nov 2021, 15:37

So, how much would you have been prepared to pay for a ticket to see The Shadows, AND have a 3 course meal, back in 1982?

Whilst sorting through some old papers today, I found a flyer for the The Shadows at Blazers night club in Windsor on 4th November 1982. It was the first time I'd seen them live, and the ticket price included a 3 course dinner (I had Gammon & chips!). Ticket price was ......... well, lets have your best estimates for the price first! :D

Yup. £8.00 a ticket!! Can you believe it - £8.00 for a 3 course meal and a Shadows concert. I paid around 3 times that much for the "Re-united" concert, and still didn't get gammon and chips, let alone a starter and a pud :o . According to The Bank of Englands inflation calculator, it's the equivalent of a shade under £30 in todays money - insane value.

I wasn't in England in 1982, but if The Shadows had come to the most boring town in Britain in the summer of 1966, I would definitely have attended their concert regardless of the ticket price. I had a summer job as a bellboy at the Angel & Royal Hotel in Grantham, Lincolnshire in 1966.

Maybe this was during the time that Blazers was run by the late George Savva, an entrepreneur of some flair, by all accounts. The following extract is from...

http://www.ukcabaret.com/legendary-nigh ... avva-dies/

"George was initially head hunted by Ladbrokes as the Head Waiter at Caesars Palace, Luton, but was soon promoted to become the Manager. He later joined Blazer’s at Windsor as the General Manager. A 1200 seater venue that soon became the place to play for all the UK’s major entertainers and attractions. These included Cliff Richard, The Shadows, Shirley Bassey, and the venue also staged a number of Royal charity fundraising events."

Don't know, but I remember seeing them in Wigan in their early days for about half a crown old money.

Well, I'd have paid twenty! (If I'd been living near enough!)
