Just seen a pic of a concert poster for one of Larry Parnes shows on Facebook for Feb 26th (no idea of year). Headliners are Gene Vincent and Matt Monro (an odd choice I would have thought), but further down the billing are Dickie Pride; Ian Samwell, and "Peter Chester and the Consulates".
I must confess, I didn't realise Ian Samwell continued to perform after leaving The Drifters. I wonder what material he did?

Bradford Timeline lists Ian as compere of the show.

That must have been some show. Bert Weedon and my favourite of the rockers Dickie Pride
I saw most of these rock n roll road shows but this one never came my way.

I imagine Gene Vincent’s backing group would have included Brian Bennett and Licorice Locking

I would have thought so. Presumably they may have shared the stage with Ian Samwell at some point, if he was the compere. Funny how all the Shadows\Drifters careers seem to overlap at times.

I don't think that the Sullivan / Belcher / Locking / Bennett line-up backed Gene Vincent for this concert (as they had done at the NME Poll Winners Concert in 1960). The Wildcats became The Krew Kats in late 1960. Their first single "Trambone" was released on 24. February 1961 and they were quite busy toruing under their own "new" name.

PS. Just discovered: The concert programme on Bradford Timeline gives Chris Wayne & The Echoes as backing for Genen Vincent.

Yes, the Wikipedia article on Gene Vincent (under the Europe paragraph heading) confirms this. There's also a reference to an incident two years later on a UK tour in which Vincent allegedly pulled a gun on Jet Harris!

Joe Brown has also commented on Gene Vincent brandishing a gun on the tour bus
