Wonderful Land - a better sound

Postby roger bayliss » 30 Sep 2009, 19:04

Had a good at studying Wonderful Land today to see if I could get a fairly close sound job done.

This is the result - using my 57 Stratocaster Sunburst, AC30H2L ef86 Channel with pos 2 (AC30 treble amp voice) bass cut on, Magicstomp and UBHank Vol1 backing. The sound is as recorded in my little Kodak camera mic unedited and video tarted up in Windows Video Maker.

Have fun and enjoy

Interesting the quality of sound you can get from a little camera's sound system!
I noticed how close to the bridge you played - is that where you usually strike the notes or did you do so particularly for this tune?

I played it at the bridge PU on this tune for a lot of it but it does vary at times and also I do for some others such as Apache. I think it makes all the difference to the resulting sound.

Nicely played Roger. I wish I could get Movie maker to work for me, but it steadfastly gives me an error message saying it has encountered a problem and refuses to open any movie files

Hi Roger
Ace video, mate!!
Interesting that you play in near the Bridge and get a superb sound - very accurate sounding.
Hanks habit of always holding the trem in his palm whhich pushes his plec forward (ooh er!!) makes one think that he DIDN'T play it that way, but it certainly sounds like it.
Excellent.
cheers

Thankyou Brian and Ian

Ian I tried using the AC30 Treble sound on the amp as I have done WL several times but never really got that close to the original (which original - I listened to At Abbey Rd and 20 Golden Greats and they are very different) In the end I got a sound I was really happy with at home which sounded fab in the room but does not really come across as good on camera mic. It's not 'the sound' HBM did but I liked it :| The picking over the bridge PU was what made the sound on that amp setting come through and I find it's where the likes of Apache were played before the mid PU area notably. The james Bond theme sounds great around the bridge or just before it and as guitarists we have to get away from just simply playing in the 'comfortable position' if we want a good recorded sound and experimentation is the key. ;) :D I must get me a good microphone or two and use it because thats another story ain't it :)
