Without being too obsessive about guitar tones, with some adjustment of both the guitar and amp tone and volume controls, virtually any Fender solid with a single coil bridge pickup can be made to sound similar to another....

As has been said before, people like James, Hank and other greats sound like themselves regardless of the guitar they are using...

I can remember a time when a guy would have felt like he had won the lottery if he could get his hands on ANY Fender guitar!

From what I've read about the guitars that many American players started off with, many of them got cheaper 'student' model Fenders, and Gibsons etc early on...perhaps a Fender Duosonic or Esquire, or a Les Paul Junior.....often with a Fender Champ as a first amp too!!

Very LUCKY boys!

So, are you saying that it is possible that the original solo was recorded on a Jazzmaster after all, or perhaps even a Strat? :D

OK, moment of truth; is there any conclusive evidence that Burton played this famous solo on a Tele, or is this fact simply assumed, either because the solo sounds like a Telecaster or because the Tele has always been Burton's trademark? Could it be like Hank using the Strat on all the early numbers, except when he used the Gretsch in Nivram (and in one or two other Cliff vocals) ? 8-)

Or whether James Burton played the solo at all - could have been an unknown session man

NO- I didn't say that James used any particular guitar or other on that or any other record... that was NOT what I said...please read my last post again.

Also I did NOT say that James ' playing was really done by some other session player...

Please don't put words into my mouth- or rather, please do not read things into what I wrote which are not there..there have been enough arguments about such allegations on this site in the past which have sometimes got nasty and out of hand..

Cockroach, I didn't put words into your mouth. I merely inferred from what you said that basically anything was possible and expressed my conclusion with a rhetorical question followed by two Smilies indicating a jovial mood.
