Hi Robby! The sound and playing is exelent :o And nice to see that you are using the Vox Tonelab as i.I checked my settings on it,and there wasn't many parameters of compared to youres.The treble boost makes a huge different to the sound.But i think the Long Tom colors the sound to get the sound you have? Correct me if i'm wrong.Any way,a very nice performence. :thumbup: :thumbup:

Treble boost does make a different to the sound. And you are right about the Long Tom, it does color the sound, the preamp from the long Tom has something, I don't know how to describe it. It's like a compression I guess :roll: and some slight distortion on the echo signal.

Hi Again Robbie

I got my Tonelab LE out and had a go with your settings today and it worked and I played around with the tone setting on the treble booster and noticed the way it affects the upper mids and trebles wilst the normal mid control on the 'amp' probably controls and boosts the lower mids. I only have a magic stomp so I tended to warm the sound a little bit by cutting the presence as your Long Tom adds more warmth.

I am sure now that Wonderful Land was probably recorded using the AC30 Top Boost rather than an ef86 based amp and came to similar conclusions earlier on in the year when I used two parametric EQs to alter the mids and got a good match to the At Abbey Rd recording.

I think therefore that the treble booster boosts the upper trebles and upper mids and the mid control boosts the lower mids in a similar way that maybe the recording desk might have done back when it was recorded.

Regardless you found something that gets 'That Sound' Robbie. :thumbup: :thumbup: :clap: :clap:

Hello Roger,
:clap: I am really glad that it worked for you. I think you are right in relation to frequencies associated with the controls on the tonelab. I tend to rely more on the record by listening to it closely, and attempt to achieve similar tone from there rather than researching on what amp was actually used for one particular tune. The original recordings that we hear are all professionally engineered. As you mentioned recording desk at Abbey Road might take part in shaping the sound, as well as other equipment such as the pultec, fairchild 670, the echo chamber, etc. I try to include all those into account in my attempt to emulate the sound from the original recordings. It's a headache but also a lot of fun doing it :lol: . I'm not sure if I'm successful yet but I am happy and having a lot of fun playing the guitar with the setup I have right now. :D it's all my humble opinion of course.

lastly, I find that picking the strings on certain areas of the pickups will also help in shaping the right sound, for example in the opening/ending of Wonderful Land, if you pick around the middle pickup without holding the tremolo arm then apply the tremolo slightly at the end of the notes would help you to get closer to the sound that we hear on the records and this apply to some other tunes as well. I also find, back in those days Hank didn't always hold the tremolo arm all the time like the way he is using it in his modern eras. Here are some example:

Seems that Bruce forgot to turn with the others in the first FBI video :D :D

Anyway, in this, also early video, Hank plays Wonderful Land holding the trem bar the whole time.



It's funny how in 2:13 Hank is playing on the wrong part of the fretboard! :lol:

I just love the way Hank plays FBI in 1961. In those days we probably watched it but of course there was no way of recording it so if we did then it was our only shot at it.
These days we can watch it as much as we want to, over and over.
