Hi Ivo,

I think I can help with the two Star Shows.
These shows were never broadcasted in the UK. They were specifically recorded for the overseas broadcasting stations of the BBC and were distributed via the BBC Transcription Service LPs, one show on each side between 25 and 30 minutes of length.
All Star Shows followed the same pattern: two vocals by Matt Monro, two by the Raindrops, one instrumental by Derek Warner on vibes and three or four by the Ted Heath Orchestra of which one title features prominently a soloist. The last part of the show is the slot for 'the special star guest', who gets a short introduction and performes two titles.
Show #20 (111616) includes the two Shadows tracks 'Dance On' and 'The Boys'.
Show #24 (111620) includes 'Nivram' and 'Foot Tapper'.
The broadcasting date will vary from station to station all over the world. So no accurate date can be given. However, the 'Star Show #24' was recorded on 21. May 1963 and the 'Star Show #20' has probably been recorded quite close to this date.

Regards,

Ulrich

The date was 31st of December 1969. I have excluded this one, as it's a mimed performance. What I have listed are recordings played live or pre-recorded tracks for broadcast only.

I have all of the tracks I have listed. Would you be able to tell by listening, from which performance each track has been taken? Also, "Guitar Boogie" as issued on the Rollercoaster 10" LP, was it recorded on 24 October 1959?

Hello Ivo,
Yes - "Guitar Boogie" on the Rollercoaster 10" LP was indeed from 24 / 10 / 59. A priceless recording as that particular show was live and wouldn't have been saved by the BBC anyway. Re: the tracks you mention - I also have some versions in my 'archive' which are dated. As the performances were all different (slightly) - then I probably would be able to date them by listening. PM me if I can be of any further assistance.

Best wishes,

Rob :)

As "Never on a sunday" has never been released , officially, what form does it take?. Is it "That sound" or is it played in the style of "Summer holiday " at the end of the film ?.

Yes, that's true. The TV recordings feature this instrument.

Appendix 2 to the Pocket Guide to Shadow music notes the following updates to Rob's (excellent) research.
1 add an entry for Saturday Club 20/6/59 Driftin', Jet Black - for some reason not officially logged by the BBC.
2 sat club 24/10/59 Guitar Boogie used as playout tune but not officially logged.
3 Sat Club 19/3/60 the number Dooby Dooby Wah was reputedly performed but not officially logged
4 The Star Show 21/5/63 Nivram and Foot Tapper

Rob, are entries 1 and 3 still correct ? I see you mentioned earlier in this thread that driftin wasn't played in 1959 and dooby dooby wah was only played on radio luxembourg.
The BBC archive also lists the following as preserved
The Shadows Dance On 2'11" 8.63
The Shadows Foot Tapper 2'32" 8.63
The Shadows Nivram 2'52" 8.63
not sure what programme these are from though. 8.63 is given as the recording date.
Finally are any recordings thought to exist (off air etc.) of the non Saturday Club appearances by the Jet Harris line up ? I understand pretty much all the saturday club material survives in one form or another. Looking forward to these appearing on Rollercoaster Records in the future.
