Gary Taylor plays Cavatina

Postby tonykiek » 16 Sep 2009, 12:26

Video'd at Spike's barbecue in Perth (Western Australia) earlier this year (2009), Gary adds his inimitable touch to this classic tune, with Tony Kiek on keyboard (strings and arpeggio guitar) with a drums and bass backing track. Professor Paul Rossiter of TVS fame hovers in the background ever ready to tweak a knob or two.

He does get a uniquely smooth and very full tone - looking at the video he appears to be using the bridge pickup. Any idea what the guitar's playing through?

I'm sure Gary was using a TVS3. I think into a Fender twin reverb amp, but Spike, Paul or George will be able to give you the full details I'm sure.

I was using a Yamaha PSR 3000 XG keyboard/synth/arranger, my trusty companion who has accompanied me in my orbital travels. Now being banked alongside a new Yamaha Motif XS7. But that's just keyboard stuff. Me mate Cliff H will be interested though. Warren's probably got himself a Fantom G8 by now.

Hi Tony,
Glad you mentioned this because I'm looking for a keyboard purely for home recording usage. I played a self contained Yamaha many moons ago that had its own speakers, sounds, rhythms etc but for making my own backing tracks or possibly just to add strings, piano etc arrangements to existing ones, I think I need a simpler controlling keyboard of some sort that can be linked to software-based sounds within my computer DAWs.
I currently use Cubase4LE and Audacity software but neither have added orchestral files within the package. BIABox seems popular but there are several alternatives, none of which I have experience of using. Maybe I don't need a keyboard at all and the software files can be adapted to suit my needs? Again I'm stumbling around in the dark a bit here. :?

I realise most folk here are guitarists so my apologies for going off topic somewhat but I don't know where to go, site-wise, for guidance on what's what for keyboards these days so any help here or perhaps by private mail if deemed more appropriate would be much appreciated.
I'm away for a few days and it's not an urgent request but pointers in the right direction would be most welcome if you have time.

Kind regards,
Martyn

Basically, there are three ways to create a midi BT. (1) Play and record all the individual parts yourself as separate tracks,(2) Use a built-in arpeggiator in your keyboard to do the bass, drums, fills, etc while you play the melody and chords, (3) Use a product like BIAB or Cubase or Sonar to type in or "program" what you want. I use a combination of all three methods to make my midifiles. But (2) is the fastest way to get a result - hence I find I need a very sophisticated keyboard with a lot of built in rhythm/accompaniment patterns (called "styles"), and to supplement that I access the Yamaha user group which has thousands of "styles" that you can get for free - I have a huge archive of styles that I have downloaded, including Rock, Latin, Country, Jazz, Classical, etc.

Martyn, please email me at tonykiek@hotmail.com if I can be of any further help.

I haven't, but I've read al lot about them and heard/seen a lot of Youtube vids. They look pretty darned good. Sunny Silvie uses a Ketron and her opinion would be well worh seeking. I'm not sure if she's joined this new site yet but I'm pretty sure whe was a member of the previous site.

Hi,
Gary was playing one of Spiro's Vintage reissue Strats through a TVS3 into my repro AC15 sitting on top of a 35w tube booster amp with another two Blues. From memory I think we were using a Roland 301 patch in the TVS3. The backing tracks and keyboard went through a Fender Deluxe Reverb.
Regards,
Paul.
