This is a new EU decision, but not sure it's already effective in all EU countries, neither that it will be effective for recordings which have already reached the previous 50 years limit.

Well done for trying, Rob. There still must be some bad blood somewhere between the boys and EMI, although the company has not been exactly a happy place in recent times!

It amazes me the amount of artists that are nowhere near the stature of the Shadows gets boxed sets of live shows, unreleased tracks etc but EMI turn their nose up at them.
EMI must have made a small fortune from the Shadows records between 1960-65 and they still refuse to release anything, it could be one of the Shadows refuses to sanction release of the material.

EMI don't actually need The Shadows (or any other of their artistes) to sanction the release of recordings made by EMI under contract (whether at the studios or elsewhere).

However, it seems to have been the case so far that the company has tried to accommodate the wishes of Hank and Bruce when considering the release of archive material. I'm not sure that Tony Meehan or Jet Harris would have used any veto to which they were entitled.

PS: Just been listening to Helen Shapiro's version of Because They're Young, complete with a middle eight never used on instrumental versions. Another comprehensive archive release.

It is pretty well documented on this forum, who that man is ;) , for reasons of quality control. Yet the material that has "escaped" sounds good to me. Indeed it could be argued that the so called "bootleg" material is equal to or even superior to some of the early vocals, or the later stuff that limped out of Polydor. ( Dons tin hat and retires to a safe house ) :)

I think it is really special and extremely impressive that The Shadows' music has lasted 50 years and is still going strong. Not only that, but most of us probably agree that The Shads' music sounds just as good today as it did 50 years ago. As a slightly younger generation than myself would say, "They still rock."

Best wishes,
Donna

The 1962 shows in Paris were recorded in March, still with Jet on bass and in September, now with Licorice on bass. The copyright date of those recordings is a few months short of reaching the magic fifty years of age boundary. I therefor wonder if the rights have been bought to release this material, or that it is a release to be classified in the grey area of official/unofficial.
