Sky / Murdoch / Criminal Behaviour

Postby RayL » 24 Apr 2012, 08:00

Out of interest, has the unpleasant and often criminal behaviour in the Murdoch empire caused anyone here to cancel their Sky subscription?

I complained about special offers for new subscribers and got free telephone line rental and 25% off my package for 6 months. ( I did not tell them i would leave SKY) So I think that was decent customer service. No doubt this is not what many sky customers have found.

Keith,

I did the same with Sky a few years ago and had my payments reduced substantially. Just like Gas, Electric, Car insurance and many other things in life you should keep comparing what's available and the price. When I retired a short while back I went through everything and was surprised what price you can get things for if you look around. It takes time but when you're retired that's OK, you have the time to do it but not the money. My biggest saving was home contents insurance.

Ray,

I still have my Sky and I've already tried Virgin so is there an alternative? I have Sky TV, broadband, phone with free calls 24 hour a day including some overseas countries (mostly Europe) and line rental for £48.25 per month. I pay extra for calls to 0800 Nos and to mobile phones.

Sky TV £23-50
Broadband £7-50
Line Rental £12.25
Unlimited calls £5.00

Does anyone get a better deal I should look at.

Simply because you do not like certain individuals within an organisation such as Sky (B Sky B) I believe that to cancel my subscription would be an act of cutting off ones nose to spite my face. I thoroughly enjoy my Sky tv channels, phone and broadband and having, like others, tried Virgin with a disastrous outcome I am happy to pay my £58.27 per month, yes I too negotiated a deal, and I still don't like James Murdoch, Rupert Murdoch.
I would be interested if anyone can name an organisation that is "Persil white" and does not have individuals within it who at some time have done shady deals or have questionable conduct in their past.

In business, as in life, there are no absolutes of black and white, only many, many shades of grey.

However, within those shades of grey everyone makes a decision about what they are happy with and what they are not happy with. They 'set the bar'. It is interesting to see that so far everyone who has reponded finds that what Murdoch offers outweighs any moral standpoint.

Would anyone care to say what behaviour by the Murdoch organisation would cause them to change their mind and cancel?

Insisting that everyone who has a TV pays a flat annual fee regardless of whether they want Sky's services or not?

That might do it for me.

But even then, I'd miss Sky Atlantic. And "Dexter" on FX (even despite the naff voice of the VO artist).

Sometimes one has to dance with devil to get what we want.
Me, I want sport/lots of American cop shows/Fox News/Aljazeera and lots more. So in order to get this I dance with the devil called Murdoch.
There is another devil called Branson whom I have tried and had nothing but grief (they lost my phone number in the transition among other things) and no Sky Atlantic. How about Virgin posting 30,000+ names, addresses and phone numbers of the London marathon runners on its website (by accident of course!)
So yes I have morals and if there was another option I would probably go there however if I get rid of Sky I lose more than I gain IMHO.

My own personal experience with Virgin Media has been ok after some initial hassle with
trying to get an old Telewest tv receiver box updated to a HD model. They wanted to
charge £40 plus fitting!!. After telling them to get stuffed and threating to cancel, they
supplied one free of charge and reduced the basic TV/Phone and Broadband cost inc
line rental a few pounds off to around£34 per month.
It works ok so some happiness obtained!!!
