When I looked to see when this number was recorded I was surprised on two counts - firstly although I remember Craig Douglas having the hit with it, I found that the great Sam Cooke had made a version also and that made it to No 23 in the same month as Craig.

I don't know for sure, but would guess that the original recording was probably Sam Cooke because at that time the trend in this country was to make covers of American hits.

The 2nd thing that surprised me was that both of these recordings were in the charts in '59. I would have put money on it being the early 60s.

Anyway, many thanks for the comments Phil, Ian and Roger.

8-) Gotta hand it to ya Roger..a very nice Strat version of a song I like from the great Sam Cooke..
Nicely arranged for guitar and well played Rog...keep up the good work me lad!!
Btw Roger...is the Strat recording a DI or a microphone in front of your AC30(or 15) setup?

Cheers,

Thanks for that Ernie - glad that you liked it.

I used my Fender Tremolux for this recording with a Shure SM57 in front of the amp.

I'll use this opportunity to correct something that I said when I posted this soundfile - "Only Sixteen" was at No.1 for 4 weeks not 15, the 15 week period was how long it remained in the charts.

Hello All,

I would just like to add my support to chorus of approval and appreciation of Rogers BT's. Only Sixteen is another fine example of Roger's work. I have also had the pleasure of hearing Roger play at club meetings and the great honour of accompanying him live on bass occasionally.

(PSSSSS>>>>>Now I will let you all into a secret, Roger gets that superb sound by using a Gretsch played through a Squier practice amp) !
