England's new National Anthem

Postby LazerBass » 27 Jan 2016, 23:23

Hi, Here is a Letter from the Guardian (Sat 23-Jan) by a Gentleman from Peterborough, Cambridgeshire.

"May I suggest we have an instrumental (Letters, 15 January) The Shadows’ Wonderful Land would be ideal – no words to offend and the opportunity for thousands of people at public events to play synchronised air guitar, while doing “the walk” and singing “dang-dang-dang, dang-dang-dang, dang-dang-dang” etc."

I think he means F.B.I.
Regards to all, Lazers (in York, I hasten to add)

Splendid idea! Much better than the dirge we have.

Prince Charles wants the new National Anthem to be God Save The King.

Always thought W Land structurally similar to the national anthem and for that matter to O Come All Ye Faithful !? Somehow our anthem is a dirge though - and the words totally out of date.

Has to be land of Hope and Glory doesn't it? Lots of brownie points for Charles available if he changes it.

Perhaps "The Miracle" considering it's mainly played at sporting events and from the way
our sports teams sometimes play we need a Miracle to win anything. :D

:o I reckon Billy Connolly's suggestion on one of his TV shows was ideal.

Connolly's suggestion of that tune - actually called Barwick Green (from the suite "My Native Heath" by Arthur Wood) - was that it should replace GSTQ as the UK's national anthem.

The most time-honoured suggestion for an anthem for England (which doesn't have one distinct from that of the United Kingdom) is, of course, Parry's Jerusalem...
