Would anyone know if there is a version of Cliff and The Shads original version of The Young Ones without the strings backing in existence?

Also has The Young Ones ever been released in a stereo / pseudo-stereo version?

Yes, the 1961 recording of The Young Ones was made just by the group and Cliff and the strings overdub was done in mono-only sometime in the autumn of 1961, possibly in the same session as the orchestral overdub for Wonderful Land.

The no-overdub version of TYO has been released several times, the first such release in the UK having been on the EP "Hits From The Young Ones (Columbia SEG 8159) in 1962. That was, of course, in mono only, but the stereo mix has been released on:

1. "The Wonderful World Of Cliff Richard & The Shadows" -- CD Remember (EEC) CD-RMB 75610 (stereo)
2. "Cliff Richard At The Movies 1959-1974" -- CD EMI (UK) 8 52790 2 (stereo)

Mock-stereo?

The current soundtrack CD of "The Young Ones" features the mono orchestra-overdub version, converted into mock-stereo.

Sources include:

1. "The Young Ones" -- LP EMI/Columbia (NL) 5C 052-06963 (mock-stereo)
2. "The Young Ones" -- CD EMI/MfP (UK) CDMFP 6020 (mock-stereo)
3. "40 Golden Greats" -- LPx2 EMI (UK) EMTVS6 (mock-stereo)
4. "40 Golden Greats" -- CDx2 EMI (UK) CDS 792425 2 (mock-stereo)
5. "The Hit List" -- CDx2 EMI (UK) 8 30917 2 (alternative Keith Bessey mock-stereo version)
6. "The Young Ones" -- Digitally Remastered with Bonus Tracks CD EMI (UK) 4 77723 2 (mock-stereo).

Thanks for that very helpful information Jim.
I've now managed to locate the tracks on Spotify.

Cheers,

Well, actually the no-strings version of "The Young Ones" was first released on the original mono issue of the album "The Young Ones" (33SX 1384) in December, 1961 and on the original stereo issue of the album "The Young Ones" (SCX 3397) in January, 1962. The mono only EP "Hits From 'The Young Ones'" appeared a few months later in May and indeed features the original undubbed version in mono.

The version with the strings first appeared on the 1962 single in mono and years later in mock stereo on the mock stereo/stereo issue of the compilation album "Cliff's Hit Album" in August, 1971. The 1983 reissue of the stereo issue of the album "The Young Ones" featured all tracks in stereo, except the title track which was the mock stereo mix of the 1962 single version with the strings. The August, 2005 digitally remastered version of the album again featured all tracks in stereo with the original undubbed album version in stereo as a bonus track and the version with the strings in true mono in line with the rest of the album.

I've tried playing it without strings but all I got was a funny scratching sound.

Wasn't there also the live version from the infamous Royal Command Performance(?) or Palladium show - where Hank's echo unit packed up?

Yes and it's available on the 1994 UK VHS video "The Hit List", along with "Do You Wanna Dance" from the same show.

Are there any current or easily obtained albums around that have the mono undubbed version of The Young Ones? It seems to be hard version to locate.

Then you have to go back to the original mono soundtrack album or EP, because the mono undubbed version has never been issued officially on CD anywhere.

I am sorry to object, but the undubbed version was officially released as bonus track on the CD "The Young Ones" (cat. no. 7243 4 77723 2 0, August 2005) which came out as part of the Cliff original albums re-issue series. Optically this re-issue can be detected by the words "DIGITALLY REMASTERED WITH BONUS TRACKS" at the front bottom. Unfortunately this album has been deleted but it is available via the web.

Hope this helps.
