Over the Easter weekend, Boom Radio have been running a top 200 voted for by the listeners. Out of the four instrumentals, The Shadows got two placings, Wonderful Land at 90 and Apache at 166. Highest placed was Albert Ross at 16, with Telstar at 60.

Here's a clue to the no.1 - After the miller's tale, what colour was her face?

A Whiter Shade of Pale. It's all very subjective, of course, but really?

Again being subjective, I've never been enthusiastic about Albatross. To me it's rather boring and repetitive.

Cue now for umpteen pages of debate of what should and shouldn't have been on the list!

Well, if the Boom listeners really have voted, it's a dipstick into the Shadows' popularity among its target audience. I would like to know more about how the poll was conducted and how many votes there were.

The "instrumental" that most deserves the epithet "boring and repetitive" has to be The Shadows' version of the non-tune, two-chord exercise Sailing. it's absolutely awful, even as a vocal, and even if Gavin Sutherland did write it.

Jim - I agree that 'Sailing' is repetitive but I like it. One man's meat etc.

I think we may have had this exchange before and my opinion hasn't changed!

There is a musical category for music without repetitions. It's called 'Modern Jazz'.
