Posted: 15 Jun 2010, 16:24Well, I was expecting Jim to have dashed off a full review before he went to bed last night!
Until he does, here's a few bullet points
* Those present in the audience who might be known to folks on this forum - Jim Nugent, Spencer Scott, Tony Hoffman (came specially all the way from Yorkshire!) and, er, Bill Oddie.
* Featured artists were:
James Burton - who played Hello Mary Lou, Mystery Train, Susie Q, Polk Salad Annie
Absolute magic - those classic riffs and solos just crackled across the auditorium.
Nokie Edwards - who played Walk Don't Run, Wipeout, Hawaii 5-0 and a country-style finger-picking number. Nokie was moving slowly and may have been in pain but he still played his guitar just like ringin' a bell.
Also
Dennis Coffey (X-Motown Funk Brother but here playing harsh, distorted, stuff). Coffey was not my cup of tea and Jim and Spence felt the same way
John Etheridge (Jazz and World Music) Technically very proficient in a wide range of styles. Acknowledged his debt to Hank when he was learning and played a few bars of Apache on a Maccaferri!
Martin Simpson (acoustic folk)
Beverley 'Guitar' Watkins and Albert White (blues to open the evening)
Richard Thompson, of course, who had organised the evening and did the compering. Able to turn his hand to all the styles on show and to do so with great skill.
*All the performers got together to play Shop Around as an encore
*With so many performers the evening overran (though having two intervals didn't help) but although not everything was to my taste it was a very worthwhile show to attend.
