It's true Fred, for years I was convinced that the guitar sound had more treble, only by running my version along side the original and switching from one to the other did I begin to understand what was needed to get a better match.
I know it isn't perfect, but considering my strings are 10/46 on that take, instead of 13/56, I think it's a good likeness and who knows, if I were to try the heavy strings again it could get even closer.
The point of the exercise was to let people hear what was possible with run of the mill kit. :)

That's a great price for a Zoom G3, £79! Who's selling them for that then Dave? The best I can see is £95 from GAK.

Ian

Forgive me Ian, I saw a G3 for sale at a local store for £79 and took it that it was the price across the board, it was perhaps a one off. Still it's cheap enough at less than a hundred quid. Even if you buy Ross Hall's excellent patches, the unit is well below £200 and better than was ever available before in that kind of unit. ;)

I'm pleased with it Iain, as I said I wanted to illustrate that the sound is in reach of everyone, at not too much of an expence. :)

I love it - it has real passion and attack Dave... There is a 'bite' to this performance that is missing in even The Shads' own recent versions of this legendary tune... Both live and recorded. I find a lot of the renditions of early recordings really bland, compressed and missing attitude - missing the attack of 'youth' on the string. This one has a real purpose and I applaud you for it.

Sometimes we have to remember that it's not just the mechanics of replicating the sound - it's the energy and attitude that is the holy grail of finding 'that sound'.

You played this like you meant it - and that's the difference! Not really the Gx3.

Best,

Tony

Thanks Tony and Ryan, I'm still trying to get back to full fitness after my recent illness and I still can't play normal open chords such as 'D', ' C'' or 'G', as my fingers aren't able to make those positions yet, but my upper fretboard chording is a little easier. I guess the energy Tony speaks of may be my determination to hit the notes correctly as I'm aware that I could easily fluff them. I'm still only about 50% of what I was before the illness, maybe I have sharpened up mentally ?
For someone as talented as Tony to have noticed, that compliment means a lot as it hadn't occurred to me. :)

First Class performance Dave. Sounds so close to the original. Did you patch the sound thru your Vox ac-4 into the PC ?

I used an AKG C-1000 in front of the amp for Apache, but the Wonderful Land and Happy Birthday I seem to remember D.Iing from the Vox VT30 into the Macbook via a Focusrite Sapphire 26. The Zoom G3x records well whichever method I use. :)
