Frightened City - Vox Long Tom Echo

Phil Mcgarrick has now had time to finish the video of my second recording using the Vox Long Tom. This is the second recording I did with the Vox to show the sound you get from the middle pickup of my Strat using a 60s valve/tape echo. Again, no extra pedals, amps or added effects, but straight into Cubase. Video production by Phil in between his own great schedule of new recordings.
Hope you like it - warts n' all!

Cheers, John

Thank you both very much.

Ian: When I first started playing guitar seriously at the age of 15, I copied just about everything that Hank did as it came out. The way he hit those strings, the sounds he made with different combinations of up and down strokes, and the very clever 'back drags' over a couple of strings to get that tripling effect like in the second riff in the middle section of this number. Those difficult bits in 36-24-36 and The Savage are good examples too. Having cracked one riff you remember the sound it produces, which helps to solve other tricky bits. One of the most important characteristics of his sound is the way he hits the strings - he admits himself that he has an unusual style. His timing and the way he punches the string add significantly to his sound (with the old kit). I too hold my pick in a very unconventional way!! I hope I have captured some of his picking style! As for warts... I know someone who has a wart, but that's another story??? Thanks again.

Keith: Thanks for that great comment. I always heard the early sound as ''a powdery dry, thick and rich sound with an echo that only enhances and sustains the sound, but does not carry note repeats unless muted''. Others may disagree, and that's absolutely fine, but it is what I've based that early sound on.

Cheers, John

Thanks Lynn, pleased you liked this rendition of the old Shads number.

Martin: Yes, it was the middle pick-up. All three pick-ups have got a similar amount of punch on full tone. The bridge pick-up is bell-like and punchy too.

Cheers, John

Hi John
That really was a great rendition of "The Frightened City" your playing and the sounds were spot on
making it a pleasure to listen to accompanied with the video of you actually playing it.I have come across
another of your videos and must say what a talented and accomplished guitar player you are.

Hi Pete, thanks for watching and the great comments, your very kind. I am only able to get that 60s sound from my Vox valve echo. Very close with my Amtech echo, but the valves in the Vox fatten the sound and add its own ''timbre'' to the sound, I'm quite pleased with it.
See you live quite local to me in Gloucester. I can remember well the days when I used to do giggs at Cheltenham Town Hall in the sixties - usually 6 groups on the same gig and we all used to take the plugs off the amp mains leads and push the wires into the plug sockets as there was only about four on stage and no extensions in those days - 'elf 'n safety' then was NOT to touch the bare wires!!
Good times.

Cheers, John
