Rapiers Set at Lakeside

This years Lakeside event was lifted this year with the introduction of some top notch groups, notably ''Tasty'' and the ''Rapiers''. Licorice Locking was on top form also and played some superb harmonica numbers. Nice to see some old friends there and especially Phil Kelly.

Top of the pile were the ''Rapiers'', who were absolutely fantastic and put on a very professional set as did ''Tasty''. The Rapiers 'new' sound was something to behold and sounded like that first LP which many of us aspire to for ''that'' sound. They now use Pyramid Vintage Gold flat wound strings which produce that rich fat early Hank sound with all the harmonics and fullness that we remember so well. You had to hear it live to appreciate it fully - fantastic!

Technical String note: Colin-13/56, Neal 12/52, Lee - not sure of gauge but flats which sounded just like Jet.

Phil Mcgarrick had problems filming as he was refused permission by the sound guy to film in the balcony because he said he had to get permission to film from the groups themselves, and was also accused of ''stealing electricity'' when he tried to plug into a socket! As he was staying in a Lakeside hotel overnight I would assume he had already paid for any electricity he may have used - bit childish! He eventually found a reasonable spot downstairs at the back and waited for the Rapiers who had given him permission to film. During this part of the filming a lady manager started quizzing him about what he was doing which came across over the video recording and spoilt ''Blue Star'' so much that Phil has withheld it - quite rightly.

The Rapiers set from lakeside "Celebration of the Shadows" with permission from Colin Pryce-Jones
to upload them to YouTube.

Here is the link to the set list.

Yes a good performance from the Rapiers. Unfortunately could not hear the inbetween chat very clearly, but the music
was fine.
Particularly thought That Sound was good on the Frightened City, a number they don't do that often
Thanks to Phil McGarrick for posting these
