Black Stockings

After having listened to some of the Vibratos recordings recently, I was reminded of how keen Warren Bennett and Dick Plant are of John Barry's work. That set me off digging back through some of the old recordings and one of the tunes that I came across was "Black Stockings". (nurse the screens - quickly!!)

I've tried to keep as near as I could to the original and used similar sounding lead guitar but of course Vic Flick did use a Strat on many occasions and I'm sure that it would sound good on this tune.

Anyway I hope that you enjoy it - all comments welcome.

What a Corker!
I like that "James Bond" John Barry Sound! Sounds quite compressed - very impressive tone, however it was acheived.
Not heard this before but its so typical of the JB7 period.
Excellent recording Roger - and I guess the BT was DIY as well!! Phew!
chers
Ian
ps - Did you know that Vic Flick is his REAL name - what a cracking moniker for a guitarist!!!

Roger,
Thank you for posting Black Stockings. I thoroughly enjoyed it. You've certainly captured the Vic Flick sound.
If I may be so bold, a couple of suggestions for your 'to do' list. "Starfire" (Lordan) and "Zapata" (Flick) - both from the excellent John Barry LP Stringbeat.
Cheers,
JB

Thanks for the replies.

John - I also like the two tracks that you have suggested but they have been already covered by the Vibratos complete with backing tracks.

Ian - I didn't know that it was Vic's real name. He crops up several times in that terrific book "17 Watts".
You were quite right about the compression - I think that I had overdone it a little so I've re-mixed it.

Phil - although I've always liked the track I too found that after having played it during recording, the tune kept coming back to me.

Yes that's a great guitar sound Roger .. very good and I too cannot recall this tune so never heard it before.

With regard to your compression was it pre or post and is it a pedal etc .. just curious :)

Nice soundfile

The compression on the lead guitar part was pre-recording. That meant that I had to record that part again, but then that is always the risk when you process the sound before you record.

The actual compressor is a 19" rack LA Audio GCX2.
