Hi All, I thought I'd record some Shadows tunes for a change.
Here's the first, The Frightened City. The BT is from the UBHank collection.
I used my 82 Strat through a Boss Sustain/Compressor, Super Chorus at zero but on, to get stereo on my lead, into a Boss RV70 digital reverb unit with my own echo settings, into my AC30CC2X set on a bit of crunch and reverb, (I changed my blues for the Wharfdales in my 212 cab) it gives me a warmer live sound

Cheers CC

Hi Charles
Well done once again. I enjoyed your version of The Frightened City. It certainly sounds very close to the sound of the early Shadows version which I guess is what you were striving for. Excellent work. Thanks for posting it.
Regards
Len

Hi Charles,
I agree with Len - It does sound close to the early Shadows sound and I can't fault the playing - absolutly spot on!
But did you enjoy playing it ? I for one have got a bit tired of this one having played it for 5 years with my old band.
And after some of the recent stuff you have played and knowing what you are capable of prefer the more recent stuff you have done.
Just saying my opinion - A lot of others will disagree.
But great playing and sound.
Cheers Phil

Thank you Ian, Gary Len and Phil. Yes Phil I must agree, It's no real challenge and it is almost like gigging as the backing,(band) is all there, and I personally have also played it manny times over the years, along with loads of other Shadow material. Still, I do enjoy it though! But' having said that, one really gets the most satisfaction out of creating the whole thing! I am busy with something thats taken me a month already and I'm hoping to post it soon, maybe in a week or two, so I guess I'll be recording anouthe Shadows cover before then.
Thanks again everyone, I appreciate your comments.
Cheers CC

I thought this an excellent rendition of a classic and really like the stereo effect using chorus set at zero since I do much the same on my TonelabST to similarly offer a fuller stereo sound to the lead.
I personally feel such measures can beneficially update some of the earlier Shads stuff, which occasionally could sound a bit thin with the lead as a mono track, and inject some richness into it. I have no doubt purists will hold up their hands in horror with much wailing and gnashing of teeth

, but life moves on and there's no harm in enhancing the older material if it keeps it fresh and invigorated. It doesn't work for every example as some of the original material's uniqueness could often be down to a quirky or unusually biased sound but it certainly worked for me on this track.
Great playing, by the way, and love the tone from your guitar.
Cheers,
Martyn

Thank you Martyn, (Not related to the man himself I guess) I appreciate your good words. I know what you mean about enhancing the early Shadow recordings, and have actually dabbled, with great success, at a couple of them. One in particular being Dance On, on which Hank features very prominantly on one stereo channel. But I wouldn't dare make it public throuh posting it as it would surely be crossing the line and I'll be in line for a silver bullet or wooden stake!!
Anyway all in good fun, Thanks again,
Cheers CC
