Once again a hit from the Legendary Joe Meek, amazing when you think what he used for a recording studio.

When you wish to record a symphony orchestra, or a string quartet, or any other musical ensemble which needs a suitable acoustic space, then having the right 'studio' is important.

But for pop music recorded with close mics like HITR, the fact that Joe used the second-floor front bedroom of a flat above a leather goods shop on the A1 trunk road out of London is irrelevent. HITR is a highly 'manufactured' record (as were most of Joe's big hits) and could have been made almost anywhere.

In fact, the only facet of 304 Holloway Road that was vital to the record were the uncarpeted stairs used, with heavy foot-stomping, to emphasise the chorus - "Come Right Back, etc . . . . . ."!

ps Those Burns guitars were not used, of course, to actually make the record. They were supplied later, for publicity, when the band were famous.

The current band with the name The Honeycombs ( www.thehoneycombs.co.uk ) does not include include any of the original members and although Mac Poole is shown as their drummer, he has been unwell as many of you will know so the pic may not show the current situation.

As for "those 50's and 60's musicians" , well, that's a pretty broad question. There are still lots around (particularly the non-smokers), some performing, some not performing. Give us a few names and we'll try and help.
