I have the AC30 VR and I can get the sound very close to that of my real AC30 by using the controls. :)

I too have an original Vox AC30 TB (hand-wired, naturally) and know how they sound, though it is rarely used these days.

At a depping gig I did with "Specs Appeal" a year or so back, lead guitarist Simon Underwood was using one of those Vox AC30 VR amps. It sounded absolutely fine to me. The only problem (as advised by Simon) was that it ran out of steam a bit at the top end of the volume range; I do, however, stress that from my perspective, It sounded loud enough to me. I was using a 22 watt Fender Deluxe Reverb for rhythm guitar.
