Sitting on the amplifier fence.

Hi,
Last year I sold all my heavy tube amps because of my age and amp weights.
I guess it sounds familiar for players in their 70s.
After hip replacement I have a few more weeks before I can visit music shops.
I have read posts here that a good few of our members have changed to Boss Katana has anyone
who plays the Katana matched it with the Nextone series.
As always, most "video reviews" don't cover guitar Instrumentals with echo units.
Perhaps someone has tested these amps next to each other.
As my subject describes I am sitting on the fence not sure which amp to get.
Regards
Carl.

The Nextone amps look very similar in content to the Blackstar ID TVP series. I've got the ID TVP 30, and the tones and volume from it are unbelievable for a solid state amp. I don't know if the Boss is any better, but it's twice the price. If you're choosing, I'd certainly try a Blackstar, you may be pleasantly surprised.

Thanks Len,
I started looking at Boss because of the amount of guys moving away from heavy Vox amps
and being satisfied with Katana amps.
There was a couple of guys that had the Blackstar ID series, but changed to Boss.
One I can remember was Steve R who used the ID but changed to Boss Katana and also Dave R also
uses the Boss Katana head with Neo's for being less in weight.
I was in the process of getting the KTN head when the Nextone amps showed up that's why I asked
If anybody tried both amps together.
When I am fit enough to go to the music shop I will be abled to try out the KTN and Nextone and the ID you mentioned.
Being house bound at moment I was hoping someone had tried both Boss amps

The Katana probably is more suitable than the Blackstar, but the Nextone seems very similar to the ID - at twice the price!

Thanks Len,
You've made an interesting point.
Looks like I am toppling off fence and getting the Boss head.
About 18 months ago I had the 100 combo but my mate bought it off me,
The Boss head seems best for me.

For the price the Katana cant be beat in my opinion. I have used my 100w head for about 40 gigs now and never have a problem from a small pub to large outdoor gigs and everything in between. Great tone and easy to use.

The blackstar was great but the katana is much more flexible to me.

Thanks Steve,
The Head is looking better.
Does the 16 ohm cab make it a fifty watt amp.

Just to be clear Carl, I don’t use a Katana head, mine is the 2X12 100w combo. I tried the 50w, the 100w 1x12 and the 2x12 is better.
The cabinet with Neos that you mention that I use, is driven by my tiny Vox MV 50 CLEAN amp and sounds like AC-30.
I was experimenting with different options to the AC-30 at the time for the sake of losing the heavy weight, thus ending up with several options.
In retrospect, if I had fitted a Neodymium speaker in my Vox Valveronix 30 AVT , it would have been suffice.
I recently purchased the Fender Rumble 100 V3 and it weighs nothing and sounds brilliant for guitar, even though it is a bass amp. It was our bass player Alan Jones that let me try his and I went straight out and bought one, I got the shop display one for £180. :)

Thanks Dave,
As I get older I get things confused if I didn't have finger memory I'D
forget how to play.
I also have the MV 50 clean which is excellent amp.
Looks like you have put another light amp on the table the "Fender Rumble".
Before I decide I will have to try one.
Thanks for putting me up on the fence again At least I am not spending money yet.
Carl.

I have to say that the Rumble is seriously light. I had a an inkiling that it might work, based on the success of the Fender Bassman with a lot of top notch guitarists e.g. Clapton, Keith Richard, Jeff Beck amongst them.
The tones are very workable and as I say, the weight is negiigable.
