Lenny Kaye, Patti Smith’s guitarist, explains why the quest for new guitar sounds has driven the history of popular music, from Les Paul’s first guitar to Bo Diddley’s tremolo, Duane Eddy’s whammy bar, Keith Richards’s fuzz pedal, The Who’s feedback, The Byrds’ 12-string, Hendrix’s wah-wah pedal, Uli Roth and Van Halen’s shredding, The Edge’s digital delay, Ry Cooder’s slide, and KT Tunstall and Ed Sheeran’s looper pedals. With Duane Eddy, Roger McGuinn, The Edge, Bonnie Raitt, Seasick Steve, KT Tunstall, Joe Bonamassa, Uli Roth, Vernon Reid, Heart’s Nancy Wilson, The Runaways’ Lita Ford and producer Shel Talmy.

(No mention of The Shadows or Hank Marvin... which seems an odd oversight.)

If the programme was made by a British team, it would be a mistake to left out Hank and The Shads....
Although regarding lots of so called experts, before the fab four there was nothing worth mentioning in British music....
Some of them are convinced, the Liverpool fab four are the reason the AC30 was conceived...not a certain bespectacled red guitar using Geordie...who just asked a twice as loud AC15...
If it was made by Americans well....they will always look in their own kitchen first and only mentioning foreign influences, that are are so big you can't walk away from it.
We al know The Shads where not even a blimp on the radar regarding USA marked....
Hank is only mentioned in Fender brochures as a side note...with a tiny picture, although he has 6 different signature guitars (apart form Burns and the CRS-59)
All of these are kinda dealer select adventures... sure back then some adverts were published especially for targeted markets.
But Hank hasn't any signature guitar in any normal Fender brochure/website...because I reckon black clappy strats are going in more quantities a month....then Hanks signatures in total.

Strangely, for a series made by the BBC, the presenters of all three editions (Stewart Copeland, Tina Weymouth and Lenny Kaye) are American. Whilst they are all very knowledgeable and have all worked in the UK, this will probably give the series a slightly skewed and Americancentric view of things. Perhaps they are looking at a big US sale. I suppose the truth is, that for MOST Americans, UK rock/pop music began with The Beatles. It's a shame, but it's nothing that can be changed now and it obviously benefits programme makers (from a commercial standpoint) to go with this and make them from the American perspective. Now let's imagine that, for example, the three part series was presented by Glenn Matlock, Chris Rea and Nicko McBrain, then I think it would turn out to be quite different in many ways! Maybe that's an idea for series two...?

I think there's a much darker side to the music 'business' and it may explain why certain artists get left out as it were. Sadly there has always almost been an agenda in the music business as a means of promoting certain social agendas- I think many aspects would deeply shock people. Look around you and work it out for your selves.
