Anyone any ideas about how to keep my nails strong for guitar pickin'?
I've bought all sorts of various nail varnishes and such stuff without success. (They think I'm queer at the cheap nail varnish stall in the Birmingham rag market )

Derek... don't mess with my messages.

Ecca, due to the ever present politically correct people who are about you cannot use that word.

The correct term would be "inexpensive" nail varnish.

No offence you sweet thing. 8-)

One of the worst things for weakening nails and softening skin is washing up liquid. So, I would do the washing up but........

We've seen Ecca's knees at the Hankies many times, but I don't think we want to see his toenails, even if they are painted in a tasteful scarlet hue

I have spent many more years playing finger style (often instruimentals) on a steel string acoustic and even now in my band most of my work is finger style on a twelve string.

I found early on that the secret to keeping longish nails was to regularly file, rather than cut, them. That way, they thicken up and strengthen. So, as they grow a bit, just file them back - usually once a week, and after a few months, you should find they are thick and strong.

All the best,

Nick.

Not mine Nick.... they're just too flimsy.
I've tried mollycoddling them.

It will work Ecca, just a matter of time. Mine were pretty delicate in the beginning - not now ! Try it for a few months. They do not need to be too long as you know, just long enough to begin with. The filing will definitely make them stronger over time.

All the best,

Nick.
