Help required with under saddle pick up ...

I have just purchased a S/H Kala Archtop Tenor Ukulele fitted with a factory fitted Shadow under saddle pick up.

My problem is that there is a loud buzz/hum when the instrument is plugged into an amplifier which I would like to eradicate.
It sounds like an earth hum and it stops if you hold the jack input.
I have replaced the preamp battery with no improvement.
Any ideas anyone?
