I believe he did ask to be released from his contract, but the Shadows or their management did not feel able to do that part way through the tour.

As has been said, we have lost another fine musician.

That's correct. According to Bruce's autobiography, Francis telephoned Hank after the first night and asked if he could be released from the contract, but Hank refused, because they couldn't replace him at such short notice and it was only for twenty concerts in total.
