Has anyone tried busking in town centres, shopping malls? Is it worth doing? I've toyed with the idea. 2 things- firstly permission, secondly too many people play for too long and too loud. I think in certain areas there is the risk of theft-I don't know...

Funny you should ask...recently, I was in the city (Adelaide , South Australia) on a rare trip down from where I live in the country about 30 miles away..

The usual place for buskers is the main city pedestrian shopping mall, and there were the usual selection of buskers, playing with amplification and backing tracks including one unlikely looking character..rather than the usual enthusiastic dedicated youngster, the bloke was older, and frankly, looked like a tramp!

But, God bless him, he was playing electric guitar with a backing track- Theme for Young Lovers!! and quite nicely too!
