Hi guys,

Does anyone have Steve Gibb's tab for Dance On!? I'm interested to see how he's transcribed the chords for the middle-eight as there seem to be several schools of thought on this. If you have, I don't want the tab, I just need to know what the chords are for that section of the tune.

According to "Hits of the Shadows (off the record)" which I believe to be a very accurate source of information the chords are :-

/ D / E / A / A / D / E / Bm / E7 /

Thanks Roger. I have this book. I also have the original sheet music, which (transposed up from its incorrect key of G) gives D E7 A A D E7/(A) Bm E7 - the sixth split bar of E7/(A) seems to indicate an optional chord for the second part of the bar, hence the brackets around the A. Some folks say this optional A could even be an F#m. I just wanted to see what the oracle that is Steve Gibb has to say about it!

Dear Martin: I just wanted to say thanks for posting your question, because it helped me learn about music. I was unable to help you with your specific question, but it was interesting to know that you and others sometimes find discrepancies in different versions of sheet music, tabs, etc. As a beginner, that is happening to me a lot. Some of that is because of the fact that I'm a beginner, but hearing you all discuss chord and key discrepancies was still helpful to me. It was just last night that I was wrestling with some sheet music of "Peace Pipe" and I had the guitar tabs from Goran's site -- which for me were more than adequate. I was just trying to reconcile the sheet music with the tabs, in an effort to learn certain things. Eventually I realised that...or at least I think that...the sheet music and the guitar tabs are in different keys. The sheet music was too low in pitch and played too low on the fretboard. For me, it would be a monumental effort to try to change the sheet music to what I want to to be...so I'm finished with that project and I'll just use Goran's tabs.

I guess I'm just trying to say thanks for letting me know that everybody encounters discrepancies from time to time. It shows me that sheet music in a book is nice, but it doesn't have to mean it's exactly right, all the time.

Hi Donna,

As you may know, chord shapes can be transposed - moving up or down the guitar neck to play the sequence of chords for a song in any key- and so can melodies.

If you can work out the note fingering pattern and sequence for the melody in one position, then you can slide it up or down the neck, starting on the relevant fret to play the melody in any particular key. You may find that this means you can't always include melody notes on open strings, and that all the notes of the melody need to be played with fretted notes- the advantage is that you will need to learn to use all four fingers of your fretting hand, which is also useful for playing chords all over the neck. I would guess that you may have access to one of those chart diagram things which shows which notes are on which frets on which strings- studying that and trying and listening to various same notes played in different positions will help..

All the published sheet music I've seen for Peace Pipe is in B flat, but The Shads recorded it in A. This happens a lot and goes back to the big band era when most music was written for instruments like the trumpet & clarinet.

Ah ! That's why all the Hankies groan when I play Peace Pipe.
I'm in Bb and the BT's in A.

At SMSE, one player used to moan when I played him a specially-prepared backing track for The Savage. He was in A and the track was in Bb.

You should have asked for The Savage in Kent, Ecca.
