I think the car trade is the perfect example. Look at the price of spare parts in that industry as opposed to all these parts in the car together. They are the real money earners for the manufactureres.
Its usually a last resort for me to purchase a spare part, I always try to make something myself first(or repair the old part), and mostly succeed at too
