We often hear of bootleg versions of artists' work being available - but I've often wondered how it makes it into the public domain at all. Are we really to believe that the most trusted technicians etc work with celebrity artists then nick the tapes once everyone's backs are turned to make copies? Or do people break in and steal the tapes? There must be so few people who have access to them, it surely must be obvious who's doing it??? The artists must be pretty appalled that the record companies aren't able to stop it happening.

Not on a commercial scale, but a musician friend of mine (now sadly passed) was a Shads fanatic, and he went to see the Shads when they toured Australia in 1967, and he went to the local show at a large hotel here in Adelaide where they played- (it was either the infamous 'tea dance' matinee or the evening show..) and he smuggled in a small battery powered reel to reel recorder and mic, and recorded most of their show- he played me the tape once- naughty, but great stuff!

The Clinton Heylin book is superb, recommended.

I think I have a copy of that. Was it "St George's Leagues Club"?

The appearance was notable for containing a performance of Eric Carman's All By Myself.

No- the Shads show he taped was in 1967 (or possibly 1968?)at the Hotel Australia in North Adelaide, South Australia.

St Georges League Club is in Sydney NSW. And that Eric Carmen song was from the '70's I think, so you must have a tape of a show from a much later Shads Oz tour?

Yes - I overlooked the "1967" bit.

I knew Clinton in the late 1980s, visited his house once in Manchester. I was greeted with the site of floor to ceiling video cassettes of Bob Dylan, never seen anything like it before or since!!

I wonder if theres a new term for half the audience pointing a smartphone at the stage ?
