GOOD / BAD

I don't watch much telly these days, as it seems to be a load of old tosh. Having said that, and for entirely different reasons, I sat openmouthed in front of the TV not once but TWICE at the weekend.
First of all (and it pains me to say this), as a Doctor Who fan of many years standing (and several sitting down), I watched in disbelief the inane mess that was this week's episode. The writing has descended to a point of farce way below just being risible. The dialogue is clichéd and seems to consist of soundbites. Peter Capaldi is OK, but Michelle Gomez (as a female version of The Master) just makes me cringe! Just because it's sci-fi doesn't mean that it has to be total nonsense. Head writer Steven Moffat should hang his head in shame. Sadly I shall have to miss next week's episode, as I shall be somewhere between Maidenhead and Cambridge (so somewhere below London on the tube). I wonder if there will be any Yeti down there...?
Secondly; and for an entirely different reason, I was absolutely transfixed on Sunday evening by episode three of Shane Meadows' This is England '90. The standard of writing and acting is right up there with the best and I can confidently say that the 'dinner table revelation scene' contained the best acting I have seen on TV this year. Impossible to pick just a couple of actors for particular praise, but Vicky McClure and Joseph Gilgun are rapidly becoming TV's latest 'dream team' - i.e. put them on the screen and they are mesmerising to watch. Next Sunday's feature length final ep is going to be incredible. In my opinion.
That's all folks!
