Girls in a Band

Quite an interesting documentary on BBC 4 this weekend.
Although mainly focussed on girls in rock and punk bands from 70s to noughties, it surprisingly paid
tribute to Carol Kaye and Merseybeat girl group The Liverbirds (better known in Germany than the Pool!!!)
Most of the featured ladies are most likely Grandmothers now, but probably still can kick ass!!!
Sit down kiddies while Grandma tells you a tale of sex , drugs, and rock and roll, and if you are very good
she will make you a pot of tasty home made soup!!!

As you say, the Liverbirds were big in the Hamburg Star Club days. Meanwhile the Kaye Sisters, Beverley Sisters and Vernons Girls also played their part as what would now be called girl bands. Closely linked to the latter were the Avons (Shads connection anyone?)
And some girls infiltrated the beat groups too - Megan Davies and Honey Lantree being the two I remember best.
Thanks for the tip, Mike. Sounds like another date with the BBC iPlayer!

The Avons were a mixed-sex group, like the Mudlarks or the Stargazers.

True. The original Avon Sisters had been (and remained) girls!
I only snuck 'em in to provide a tenuous link to our heroes

Not forgetting The Springfields (Dusty) and The Seekers (Judith Durham)
In my opinion two of the finest female singers of their era

Then there were the Caravelles, the girl duo who had a one-off hit, You Don't Have To Be A Baby To Cry, in 1963.

One of the Caravelles was married to a workmate of mine
