Sect Appeal - book by Terry Gibson

If you've got an interest in the UK music scene of the early 1960s, then Terry Clemson (Terry Gibson, lead guitar of The Downliners Sect) has just written his own account of those years 1963-1966. It's an excellent read and very funny at times. Although they never made it big, the Downliners were there in the rhythm & blues scene around London alongside the Stones, the Yardbirds and many others.

After their first, very rare, EP on Contrast (and after recording a second which only came out 50 years later!), they were signed by Columbia but, as Terry explains, they were let down by a lack of good material. A feature of several of their singles was a B-side with a pun on the word Sect - Insecticide, Be A Sect Maniac, etc.

Thanks for the tip, Ray. I well recall the deerstalker and Little Egypt has always been a favourite of mine.

Although no hit singles , they did release 3 albums between 64 -66, which are now valued at around
£150 each for mint original issues.
EMI records must have had some faith in them, even without hit singles.
Worth indeed picking up a CD of their 60s material for anyone interested in R&B groups in this period.

I remember seeing them at the Loyola hall in London and trying to desperately learn the words to 'Cops and Robbers' as they were playing it!! So easy now with the internet!!

George,
My copy came via master bass man Rob Murly, who is currently in Terry's band the TTs, but you could contact Terry direct at terrycaster(at)hotmail.com (replace (at) with usual symbol, etc).

Bill,
If what you remember is Don's deerstalker, wait 'till you read what Terry thought about it!

It was supposed to represent some sort of social comment, I gather!
