There are two different takes of The Breeze & I, the version released as the original single featuring the overdubbed acoustic guitar solo in the middle section, and subsequently issued one without the acoustic solo and a different ending.

Did he wire the pickup selector differently? In my ears it sounds like a bridge pickup.

The Fentones were a great group! You can see them (with Shane Fenton aka Alvin Stardust aka Bernard Jewry) in the Billy Fury film Play It Cool. Jerry Wilcock was one of the best HM-style guitarists around at the time and bassist Bill Bonney was always at Shadowmania (I believe he lives in Canada; did he make the journey especially every year?). The Mexican is an epic piece of music! I learnt it once and I remember being very pleased when I worked out how Jerry did those E and D string slides just before the fade-out...

I didn’t notice until you pointed it out, Wolfgang. He seems to be using his neck pickup, but sounds like he’s using the bridge. He’s a very energetic player.

Just a reminder to those who attended the Pipeline Convention in 1995, that three of the original Fentones (Jerry Wilcock, Bill Bonney and Tony Hinchcliffe) came 'out of retirement' to play a very fine set. They reproduced The Mexican note-for-note as their closing number. Of note for Shadows fans is that they included Just For Jerry, their tribute to Jerry Lordan.

That must have been quite a treat, Ray. I would have loved to watch them. There are no videos on their instrumental pieces that I could find.

When I wrote the Fentones were known here in Manila in the early 60s, I should have clarified that it was their instrumentals, like The Mexican, that were popular. We didn’t know anything about the band then, and it was only recently that I learned their story and the names of the band members. Wilcox was very good with his own style.

Robby Januarsa is a member on here. He's got the Hank sound pretty well nailed and has posted quite a few sound files, all attracting favourable comment. Looking at the member list, he still seems to visit the site but he hasn't posted for some time.

I would concur with what Tony has just said. Robby is a member here and also posts regularly on YouTube and Facebook. He is a very talented guitarist and, if one listens to his covers of Shadows' numbers, has certainly got the 'sound' and Hank's early style of playing nailed. I have exchanged emails with him several times and he has very kindly and generously given of his time to advise me on how to achieve a better sound. Definitely worth a visit to his Youtube channel.
