Sixty years ago today I bought this record for my sixteenth birthday, which started my lifelong appreciation of The Shadows and a desire to play the guitar.

The sound was to change music forever, and here I am nearly six years after coming back to playing guitar after a diversion into sailing, and I'm still rubbish at playing Apache, but hey what enjoyment!

I often wonder what life would have been like without that record and the Shads. Personally there would have been a huge hole and a lifetime interest in good rock/prog music might not have developed - I'd have been a lot richer pounds-wise I suppose but not in the important things.

On a grander scale would we have all missed out on the likes of Knopfler and Gilmour etc etc? Probably!

I suppose every generation has their own 'Apache' but nothing can be so crucially important.

Hi Mike,

Without Apache....I couldn't agree more with you, in all of that...because we hadn't this site and opinion ;)
You wrote exactly, how many of us feel and lived their life's the past decades.
Richer in enjoyment of music and playing, poorer in money because of the that
Music scene very different.....like someone of the fab 4 said without the shads no ....
Who knows what we would listen to he last decades???

Cheers Rob
