New Rules for payment on Ebay

I suspect like many other members of this site who buy and sell guitar stuff on Ebay you will be dismayed to hear of Ebays new payment system whereby payments don't go straight to your PayPal account but wait two working days to go to your own bank account. Ebay claim the fees are cheaper but not according to some people who say the fees are higher in some cases. Many Ebayers are up in arms about this patently obvious greed and profit grab. I was happy with the old system and have already aborted the sale of one guitar when I heard about the new system... I was preparing to have a damn good clear out of guitar stuff but now it seems I'll have to keep it all...oh dear, 'She who must be obeyed' will be disappointed...! Lol!

I’ve been clearing out some gear of late and have taken advantage of ebays £1 selling fee offer. I updated my account information so as to enable them to make payment direct to my bank account and was paid the purchase price for my sales, less the £1 selling fee which made me better off than having it going through PayPal. Maybe I was lucky that my listings coincided with the change in their policy, but my sales (almost 2 grand) were not subject to any additional fees. I’ll read their terms & conditions again but I’ve pretty much cleared out my surplus gear.

Coincidentally, I just received an email from eBay offering a discount of 80% off the final selling fee which I note from their T & C’s, is now 10% of the final selling price plus postage. That would make ebays fee equivalent of 2% which is still less than PayPal, so maybe listing under their offers, is the way to go.

Thanks Alan, yes maybe you're right, but I'm naturally distrustful of large organisations like Ebay.

Hi,

I have stopped selling on E-Bay altogether now for several reasons. Firstly the fees have become too costly, PayPal's fees were already high, and now I feel that the whole system is set up in favour of the Buyer. Yes, Buyer protection is wonderful, but what about some protection for the Seller too? It's all too easy for a buyer to claim there is a problem with an item and then invoke the various protection clauses. The first thing that then happens is that PayPal remove the payment from the Seller's account, then it can take an age to sort it all out. Payment through a normal Credit Card Merchant account gives the seller some time to get problems sorted before even considering a chargeback. There are too many scammers and fraudsters out there now and whilst I must agree than you can often pick up a bargain as a Buyer, there's always the risk of getting lumbered with a problem customer when you're a seller.

Cheers,

Ian
