That Sound - Flingel

Just as the Apache sound is unique, so is the sound on The Rise and Fall of Flingel Bunt. I have never heard it replicated by anybody, including the Shads themselves.

I’m sure we could debate Burns, top boost and many other factors until the cows come home. However, can anyone actually make that sound?

It's funny you should mention Flingel Bunt Iain, as I was working on the echo trying to figure out what he must have used, at the same time noticing something in the tone that was 'different'. The Burns guitar was said by Hank to have been used and there's no need to doubt that.
I got somewhere close - until I compared it and it's another 'Apache' in that it's unique. Harmonics and EQ are playing a part again, especially on that 'kick' in the echo. :)

Not sure whether this version is live or mimed..Tony is on drums, and they seem to be plugged into amps which are miked up??

This is a mime job to the record, so that's the sound I'm looking for. There's a piano in there on the BA-BA BA-BA-BA-BA but not, I think, when he's playing the tune.

I noticed the piano on the intro years ago, but it's the rough bark on the echo tail that's difficult to match. You can get the timing right, but the tone is strange. ;)

I wonder if this is one of those occasions where Abbey Road added something to make it unique. That might explain my impression that Hank himself has never replicated that sound since.

I think if you listen to the two albums from the same period, Dance With The Shadows & Sound Of The Shadows, the sound pf Hank's guitar is similar and the echoes are too on some tunes. The lead guitar sound is what I would call 'hoarse' and would be the result of driving the Top Boost and getting some compression taking effect. The Shadows did have a drier sound at that time and in truth it is a long way from what people recognised with Apache. :)

Quite agree! It’s nothing like Apache but it’s a unique and powerful sound which I’d love to hear created now.
