I never served in the navy, let alone the Royal Navy, but I did cross the Atlantic four times: on a Croatian, half-passenger, half freighter, on the SS Vulcania, the "Pride of the Italian Marine," and on two Cunard Line beauties, the RMS Caronia, nicknamed the "Green Goddess, and the famous RMS Queen Elizabeth -- a total of almost a month and a half on the high seas!! A truly unforgettable experience!!! No discomfort or resentment whatsoever!! :D

You think you had it tough.
We lived for three months in a brown paper bag in
a septic tank. We used to have to get up at six o'clock in the
morning, clean the bag, eat a crust of stale bread, go to work down
mill for fourteen hours a day week in-week out. When we got home,
out Dad would thrash us to sleep with his belt!

That's tough Jimbo, but just one of the hazards of going to sea. Length of trips on ULCCs varied between 8 and 14 months. Persian Gulf to whereaver.
In the weather on your photograph we would not have moved at 326,000 tonne and 25 metre draft.

Jimbo,
That is case all over. In my day it was an achievment to obtain Second Mates(FG) and eventually Masters (FG). These days the MCA almost give the certificates away. Helped by internal marking in the colleges. No need to Navigate when GPS is in vogue.
