AC30 cabinet

Hi all

Because I can no longer afford or lift an AC30 It's been (strongly) suggested I obtain a smart-looking empty AC30 cabinet and put my Boss Katana 100W 1x12 combo inside it for image purposes. I've tried searching on the internet but no joy. The only source I could find was an American company called North Coast Music but they only ship within the USA. Any advice would be much appreciated.

I built my own! But AC30 cabs are a lot of work and I wouldn't offer to build another. However, I'm very happy to share the details of how i mounted the Katana. As regards someone to build the cab, a friend suggested Noisy Hammer woodwork. I don't know them so I'm not in a position to recommend or otherwise.

Just Brainstorming here:-

Why don't you consider getting a Vox front only. Maybe just make a frame and put the vox grill and logo on it. Pop it in front of the Katana - much lighter.
One problem would be - someone would hear the sound - like it - see the vox and go and buy one.

This is like back in the 70's when Japanese stuff was rubbish. I responded to someone on a certain stereo Hi fi system (Tuner / Amp / Record Deck and Tape) for a fraction of the price of good stuff. I advised against. He bought it and said it was great.
He was looking forward to a party he was putting on. I suggested he should watch out - just in case someone turned it up. It happened.
He then had the bottle to come to me to see if I could repair it as the 3 months guarantee was up. None of the components were marked so no fix. However at the time Mullard did the UNILEX system and the so I replaced all the innards except the speakers. All for £39. As it so happened all the controls lined up in the cabinet.
He thought it sounded even better than before. Later I heard him convince someone that his system was great ----- BUTTTTT did not inform him the innards had been changed.

I am thinking on getting an MV50 AC and BC108. Had a demo of this system in a large hall. Impressive - Light and probably with two BC108's loud enough for most. If you want the larger speaker I suppose one or two BC112's would be the ultimate.

If I have the correct Katana model - its 22kg. Still quite heavy - almost as much as the AC15. In a Vox cabinet your approaching the weight of an AC30.

Just a thought.

A "real" AC30 cab tends to be made of 18mm birch ply. My cab is made from lighter materials, still mainly 18mm ply but not birch. It's probably lighter than the Katana cab which is particle board and mdf. You could probably get away with a 12mm ply cab suitably braced and with false built up front edges as per JMI, for appearances. With the Katana chassis and 2x12 speakers mine is quite heavy but not as much as an AC30. I've now changed the Katana speakers for Eminence Redcoats which are a substantial improvement imho. Neodymium speaker(s) would contribute more weight saving.

I suppose I could have put the Katana in a separate head cab which could slide out of the larger AC30 lookalike for transporting.

You've caught me on the hop, gentlemen - I didn't expect so many replies so soon!

I think David's suggestion is the way to go, though I'll certainly float Stuart's idea of having just a front when I make contact with the guy at F.B. I'll let you know how I get on.

I have a North Coast Music cabinet built into an AC30/6 so they are available in UK but they are very expensive.
May i suggest you get hold of a second hand VR30 from say ebay (around £250.00) rip out the guts (which you can sell on)
and with a little bit of chippy skills blank off the control panel aperture re-cover this area and there you have it an empty cab.
I have done this for a mate, it only takes a few hours and i sold the guts for £90.00 so happy days.
