Clever Stuff Paul andI must admit I am struggling to read the info, but I see what you are saying about the fit of the EM2 echos , so maybe it was the LT. But does that have issue in explanation, in that it does not explain the head levels on the repeats fot the LT ?

Hi Roger,

I have worked on a number of Long Toms and the levels of the various heads can easily vary by up to 3-4dB just due to head alignment (the worst I have measured was a 10dB variation where there was also some wear involved!), so I don't think that it is an issue, even if the one used by Hank had no electronic modifications in addition to all the cosmetic ones.

The notations on the diagrams are indeed a bit fuzzy but are just reproduced from my original analysis and give a timing (77, 154, 231, etc) with a subscript that indicates whether the are the first echoes or repeats (e.g. 1 for the first echoes and 1/2 for the first repeats) . Those above the trace are from the first note and those below are from the second note. Hope this helps.

I'm excited about the idea of being able to control and edit the heads on the Strymon Volante and it's something I intend to study.
Meanwhile I have found and purchased a Meazzi Echomatic which was affordable and I hope to get a feeling of what all the fuss is about.
Should it not live up to expectations it will go the same way as many others. I always resisted buying one of these as I believe the sound is in the player and the amp, but I will happily be proved wrong if that's what I find.

Nice one Dave, I have played through a few Meazzis , but never owned one. I should be able to carry on with the MIDI programming after tomorrow when the good lady is back at work.

Hi Dave,

Just something to bear in mind about the transistor Meazzi. While a transistor Meazzi can sound very nice if in proper operating condition with similar head responses compared to the tube version, the circuitry is totally different and the distortion and compression artifacts that it introduces are not the same. So if it doesn't meet your expectations there may still be one more step to take!

Came across a comment on this site which states a Binson Echorec 2 was used o Flingel Bunt. Any thoughts Paul ? Scroll down to the echos section to find it .

Hi Roger,

I dont think that would work, iirc the echorecs head spacing are between 75-80ms and pretty even volume across the heads.

The problem with the Binson proposal is that the Echorec 2 only had 4 replay heads (not 5 as reported on penumbra), and the longest delay is just over 300 mSec, nowhere near long enough for the Flingel Bunt main repeat at around 460 mSec
