Katana Mk2 version of Temptation with settings

Postby roger bayliss » 15 Feb 2021, 21:13

Hi

Had enquiry off a member on Charlie Halls site about my settings for Katana 100 head Mark 2 and should you want to try them you are welcome to download them here with link below.

I am not sure how this will work on the 50 watt version as no presence control ? And other features that 100 watt version has and it was written as stated for 100 watt Mark 2 head.

Please note this includes flavours of AC15 and AC30 tones which should be evident in the editor. There are some eq and compression settings which you might want to adjust to taste in each amp setting. Good luck.

Here is a version of Temptation I recorded with the Karana 100 watt head using the inbuilt 5 inch speaker . All sounds and effects were from Katana including delay. Recorded on phone camera only.

Hi Roger,

I dont have a katana, I am actually considering getting one but it would mean having to part with my blues jr so I'm in two minds.

I've only been able to listen through my phone but it sounds pretty good to me.

Hi Scott, I use the 100w mk2 Katana which I find does all that I need it to do.

The Katana is very good and versatile, but it is not a real Vox model as such, but you can tweak things a lot and the effects alone are great. Bliues jnr is also a great amp , but not a true Vox sound.. It really depends on whether the Blues Jnr is getting you the right sounds. I would say out of the 2 the Katana is more versatile . See if you can try one if possible first.

I chose the head version which has a 5 inch speaker built in which I used on demo. I also have a celestion blue in a separate cab which helps the sound.

Additoonally Scott, something you can do with the Katana and any amp with send and return or a jack for power amp access, you can bypass the amp preamp section altogether, just using the power amp section and speaker.

I did this with my older Katana mk1 100 combo and attach a uTube video of this below.

I used an HX Stomp to provide a sim of Vox AC30 preamp, together with eq and compression. The HX Stomp went into the return jack of the Katana. I put guitar into Blue Baby echo, then into HX Stomp then Katana. I recorded my mate playing Wonderful Land. I used my phone to record it. As I move camera around the room you can hear it change the recorded sound. Use headphones and it will be more apparent.

The backing is an original recording with Hank removed.

Here is same idea using a Laney head and Celestion blue speaker in cab.

Thanks Alan and Roger,

I forgot you also used one Alan, but I remember you mentioning it now and what great sounds you have had out of it. I think I may have a serious look and get one, I dont gig and have the AC for valves. The blues jr has been a great amp and I get a really decent tone out of it, just fancy something different with a few more options.

I had all the Katana amps that were released in the first mark and they are good.
I had the the 50w to begin with, then moved through all the combo options 1 x 12 100w, 2 x 12 100w and finally settled with the 100w head.
The reason for that was that I felt the speakers were the weak link but with my Celestions it sounded as good as any Vox and was more versatile.
The only reason that I switched to the Fender Tone Master was because of the aesthetics and weight.
With the Boss software on the computer it was possible to get all the sounds and most of the echoes programmed for our music.
Roger's sound on Temptation could easily be a Vox and if aesthetics aren't an issue I'd recommend the 100w head any time. :)
