I think it’s called being creative, you knew it wasn't going to be one for the purists, but it doesn’t hurt to try something a little different now and again.
I don’t know if you are into movies, but there is a fairly recent film called “The Rhythm Section”, the title has little to do with music (female assassin) and it’s gaining a bit of cult following over here. Not exactly Shadows (and may well destroy my street cred), but one of the soundtracks is based on an old Lead Belly blues number “Where Are You Sleeping Tonight”, again it was one of those where I had not heard the original and but impressed with the way the track worked in the movie (seems quite a few others were too!).
